Okay folks, just a head's up...I'm working security at a local anime convention and will be busy ALL DAY FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY; note that I'm currently working on BOTH 'The Little Immortal' & 'Pebble and the Unicorn' and in the meantime, have a ramble a'la Stan Rants: ~~~
Having just finished the Nostalgia Critic's review of Tim Burton's "billion dollar Alice fanfic" (watch me: thatguywiththeglasses.com/vide… ); I must feel the need to voice something that's irked me for a while...what is this current obsession with making Alice in Wonderland so damn dark?! I mean besides the unnecessary epic war-prophecy whoozawasit of the Burton film; we have American McGee presenting us with a dark, traumatized Alice wielding a knife and dealing with a bloody, gory, dark, gloomy Wonderland out to kill her or drive her insane (not exactly fond of the fact that the Critic used THIS Alice for his "review partner"); Zenescope cranked that up past eleven with their godawful grimdark "Return to Wonderland" comic series; there was that just plain disturbing 1988 Czech film, then there was the 2009 crime drama mini-series; manga and anime have gone all over the place from lesbians to Pandora Hearts; I stumbled across a 1999 BBC audio-play that, while still quite decent and a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, still felt a bit dirty listening to (what with Alice constantly moaning and whimpering during her growth scenes...yeeeeaah ^^;); and we have this "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" which is less Alice and more "THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE MAIN SHOW. HAVE SOME OTHER DISNEY CHARACTERS! JAFAR! GENIE!!!"....

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but can't we just go back to having a fun, whimsical, wacky Alice in Wonderland celebrating good-natured innocent nonsense like that classic animated TRUE BLUE Disney version and not needlessly bog it down with all the dark, emo, goth, violent, depressing, druggy subtext to it? Not saying there shouldn't be dark elements whatsoever, quite honestly I really do like the point the Critic raised about a legitimate threat for Wonderland being a villain seeking to impose sense and order upon this world of mad nonsense. The Lego Movie proved the concept does work and now I kinda want to do a Tim Burton Alice fanmake with that concept in mind....

It's just really annoying to see that about 99.9% of the Alice-related stuff on Fanfiction.net is either based on Burton or McGee's!: www.fanfiction.net/search.php?…

... The original Alice's Adventures in Wonderland tales were pretty screwed up too. :O_o:
